It was indeed TERM which needs to be defined.  On my TC70 (currently bad order
but repair underway) if I try to run ATERM with TERM defined as VT70 I get the
signon screen, the on linbe message and hang unable to properly talk to the
modem.  If on the other hand I use TERM set to my terminal (a Zenith Z19)
through /term all runs properly. I do not think that any other setup would be
required.
