I think James is right. It was inherited from OS9 Level II. To quote
my very old OS9 user's manual.
"On Level Two systems, two or more modules loaded from the same file comprise
a "group", and are always assigned contiguous memory locations, and are
treated somewhat collectively."
Too bad they don't talk about it in the OSK manual.
