WB>MS>JI>You so smart ? You do it better.
WB>MS>That's not hard. My mage script (which I made) casts as many spells as I
WB>MS>And it ain't some ripoff term program like MMTERM.
WB>yeah. but your script only works with a mage. Secondly, scripts are a
WB>pain to maintain and set up. Notice how dozens of folks each each week
WB>request scripts for this character or that. That just shows what a pain
WB>it is to code and find scripts, else these folks wouldn't be asking.
WB>So after listening to how great scripts are from all you folks here,
WB>I ran a test to see what you like about them.
WB>First thing to do was to find some scripts. Went to Dan's Page, found a
WB>script page rather easily. Unfortunately it said I need to have this
WB>comm program or that one. I use Telemate and it did have some. Only
WB>problem was they said they were for a Cleric and some other character I
WB>didn't have. They also said they only worked in certain areas.
WB>I soon began to realize how great MMTERM is.. doesn't need any comm
WB>program, works for all characters, works in any area. It may not be
WB>perfect for all characters or all areas.. but pretty darn close for
WB>little or no effort on part of the user.
WB>Anyhow.. I went to some local BBS's to search for Telemate scripts for
WB>my Ranger and couldn't find any. Next thing you know I spent almost 1
WB>hour searching. In America, the average worker earns $17 an hour.. a
WB>doctors would be worth a couple hundred an hour. So if I was an
WB>average worker.. I just spent $17 of my time and had nothing to show.
WB>A doctor or lawyer would want to spend hundreds of $$ in search of a
WB>script when for $35 they can be up and running in MMTERM.
WB>Now if your a college kid or younger and don't have a job.. I guess your
WB>time is worth nothing so doing all this work to save $35 might be worth
WB>it.
WB>And yes.. I do understand that after I do find a script, after I do
WB>spend the time editing it to work with my character.. I'll be pretty
WB>home free after that. All I need do is edit it from time to time for
WB>different areas. But if it took me 3-4 hours to find the script and edit
WB>it.. I just spent $51 to $68 in my time to get that script pefected.
WB>Again.. $35 is still a lot cheaper. To me.. no matter how many folks
WB>respond to say I'm wrong.. scripts are the ripoff. :)
Good Lord, not this again.
I've used both scripts and MMTerm (Although I don't script anymore) and
I honestly have to go with scripts. Why?
Although MMTerm is slightly easier to use, I lose out on a 50 line
screen that Telemate offers, there is also this other annoying feature
that occurs when you begin a session. It's called SET STATLINE FULL. I
don't know about you, but I hate the default statline.
Another thing I have noticed is that with scripts, even though they are
harder to maintain and not as generalized, you can do more with a script
than with MMTerm. I am in no means a programmer, but I know people who
have made scripts that can do what MMterm can do, but better and faster.
It is possible to beat MMterm autograb, I've done it many times before,
both with a script and non-script.
In conclusion -- if you don't give a damn about how the script works or
the speed but just want something, maybe MMTerm would be for you.
However, if you want something that can be configured to your liking and
is faster and overall more reliable, either make a script or beg someone
to make you one.
