 I've had a look at your code and my best guess is that shell doesn't know it's
to die on eof.  Since all you want out of shell is to set up your child for you
why don't you try having it 'ex' the child, i.e. change the line
 argv[0]="shell";

to

 argv[0]="shell ex";

This should get your child up and running and get rid of the shell at the
outset.
 This is off the top of my head and I hope it works and doesn't get you into
more tangles.
