Hmmm.  I think a shell forked with parameters (eg: shell dir) dies when the
child does, and never looks for more input.

Just for fun, try "shell (tr whatever)&"  and see if that orphans things up a
bit... ooops... no way for you to check if the child dies, altho you could
assume he has when you close off the pipe (maybe not exact enuf for you tho).

I'll have to compile a version of the code you gave before... as similar things
always worked before.  Or maybe you should just go ahead and parse arguments
and use no shell?    best - kev
