Bob -
The odd thing to me is that shell is still alive after receiving EOF on its
stdin. Standard behaviour is to terminate when that happens, and that will
implicitly close the shell's output path, and thus tr's input path. Perhaps the
implementation of popen() is at fault? Still have the source?
