Thanks, Pete, but I tried that, and forcing CD and MR on.  It seems to be some
kind of "handshaking" problem between the modem (Datatronics Discovery 1200CK)
and the MM/1's /T0 port.  Just now I hooked up another modem (Supra 2400) and
it works! (Typing on the MM/1 now).  I think this uppity little computer KNEW I
had a faster modem in the house and just refused to talk to the slow one! :).
