You can translate from RS232 to a method that permits a longer haul, then
translate back to RS232.  There are a variety of short haul modems for that
kind of thing.  You could go from RS232 to a couple of twisted pair lines and
back to RS232 with some line drivers if you want to whip up something yourself.
