Ed, in my preprocessor, the operative branch would have been
       if != there
 or
       if !0 there  (both statements mean the same thing)

The problem in your program was that the comment is N.G.  Instead of saying "if
n bit set," the programmer should have said what he really expected to happen,
i.e.  "If table entry is negative..."  This would have alerted you much quicker
to the problem, I'll wager.  In that case, my syntax would have been
       if <0 there

which is kinda hard to misinterpret!
