I have just snagged your message, and have not studied it in detail yet, but
the first thing I'd encourage is using SEPARATE pipes for stdin and stdout... I
wouldn't open the pipe in UPDATE mode. Who is mucking with the pipe buffer's
read pointer, for instance? Is it the parent reading responses? Is it the child
reading instructions?
