You may be a victim of the RS OS9 manuals. The $40 I spent eons ago to get the
'real' MW manuals was one of the best $40 I ever spent.

Page 11-70 of the OS9 System Programmer's Manual says:

  SS.FRZ

  Input:   A - Path Number
           B - SS.FRZ function code ($0A)

  Output:  None

Function:  Inhibits the reading of the identification sector (LSN0) to memory
DD.xxx variables (that define the disk formats) so non-standard disks may be
read.
