Yup, that should work fine (patching a copy of R0 to be DD).  Of course, make
sure your startup file doesn't do any /dd references ... unless the
needed files are already copied out to the ramdisk.

The only problem I can think of, would happen if your Init or Sysgo modules had
been patched to look for /dd.  Just take a look at them and make sure.
