Bruce,
OS9 is a multi-tasking, multi-user, realtime operating system originally
developed by Microware to run on the Motorola 6809 processor, and now running
also on 68XXX processors. They've also developed OS-9000, which runs on several
platforms, including 386/486 machines. For a lot more detail, check out
