Hi, Kathy,
About a year ago, we got hit with polyoma when we bought some birds from a
girl in Central Fla. Both sun conures died and were diagnosed with polyoma by
Dr Gaskins and tissues were also sent to Dr Schmidt an avian pathologist and
specialist in Calif. We had a lovebird die also that never looked right, was
always a runt and as it died first, we didn't necropsy it. The suns were not
classic cases, ie the internal hemorrhaging. Just a tiny bit of that but the
inclusion bodies were there. Anyway, I was raising a couple of fairly rare
conures at the time and one of them died too. They were the next birds
handled after the suns. Here's the thing: One chick died and one did not. We
kept a deathwatch for two weeks afterwards, with me, our vet, and Dr Gaskins
on the phone back and forth as the incubation period is (according to him)
usually 5 to 7 days, and 5 to 14 days probably at most. The 2d conure chick
lived. And, it was the younger of the two. If babies that have carrier
parents are pulled to early from the nest they usually die without the
"immunities" being given them by the parents. Anyway, the bird lived over a
year and died in an accident and we never had another bout with polyoma. Dr
Gaskins wanted to test it really bad as he assumed it had seroconverted and
had become a "carrier" due to the close exposure. However, he was not sure.
But, we never got to get it tested because it died in an accident. It was
never sick, though.
Just a little info,
Barbara
