Lee,
In the US (and I really can only speak for our US upgrade policies)
we have discontinued our 33.6 upgrades and are now offering 56K
upgrades (via trade in). Your particular unit was not upgradeable
because of the technology, which is not lower quality but just the
opposite. At the time that particular modem platform came about, it was
quite advanced, but is not, nor was it ever intended to be speed
upgradeable. Right now we are offering 56K upgrades to all modems (all
brands, all speeds) via a trade in. This offer is valid in the US. For
info on upgrades in Australia, see the Hayes Australia web page at:
http://www.hayes.com/ap/au.htm
where the following is stated:
"For information about repairs, upgrades and pricing, please contact our
Sydney office at 1800 809 789.
56K and 33,600 bps Upgrades
The policy for 56K upgrades for Australia will be announced soon. It is
likely to
involve a trade-in and there will be a cost involved. Flash files for
upgrading OPTIMA 288 to 33,600 bps are provided below. Upgrading a Hayes
ACCURA Message Modem will require a return of the modem (directly to
Hayes in Sydney) and a small handling fee.
Earlier models ("metal case" OPTIMA/ULTRA or "white case" ACCURA V.34 or
.FC)
cannot be upgraded."
