He took advantage of legal means to avoid service. Kerry tried to get his
service deferred for the same reasons Cheney used. Kerry just wasn't as
good at processing deferral paperwork as he was at faking up paperwork for
purple hearts. As far as Kerry's moral position it is no different than
Cheney. In his heart and deeds he did everything he could to get a
deferment. He just wasn't successful, but NOT for lack of trying. Once he
saw he wouldn't get a deferment and would be drafted into the Army where he
would really have to fight, he enlisted in the Navy so he could avoid the
battlefield.
