Near/Far Echo loss is due reflections on the transmission line. You will get
a reflection from the local exchange (Near) and from other hybrids along
the line (Far). Most modems work out the loss during the training
process. By doing this they can compensate for the losses. If you want
to know the details grab a book on transmission line theory....
