DH> Mike, this is an interesting point, and one which bears considering.
And now we're seeing the development of this plan of attack by
the Cintons. I would even suggest they were capable of leaking the
false report that a secret service agent was willing to testify to
having been an eye witness to a Clinton tryst. Then, once the story
was out, allowed it to be discredited so they could trounce on the
media for false reporting. It certianly would have been easy enough
for them to pull off.
Mrs. Clinton has pushed the "right wing" conspiracy theory and
included in it the press as dupes of the right. This, of course, made
the press pull in it's horns based upon it's natural aversion to being
perceived as "right wing". It's sorts like calling a "liberal" a
racist. Guilt will then make him go to any extreme you may desire to
cleanse himself of the accusation whether it has any basis in fact or
not. The press now is reacting the same way the the charges by Mrs.
Clinton.
As all of this boils down, with the administration making
references only to the invasions of Clintons personal life and given no
creedence or recognition to the allegations of crimes, the public, via
the self-cleansed press, is beginning to be swayed heavily back to the
side of Clinton. Only time and the facts in the case will prevent the
Clintons from walking away from this entirely.
One point the media has failed to make is this. The Clinton
administration has launched a full scale public relations campaign to
sway people to being sympathetic to the President. Experts and spin
doctors have been brought in from all over the country, press
conferences have been held, planning has been conducted on ever detail,
and a major effort, involving literally hundreds of professionals has
been deployed on behalf of Clinton in a calculated attempt to ressurect
public support for him.
At the same time Starr has remained silent. He has no spin
doctors, no six digit consultants, and no legions of p[ublic relations
experts to hit the talk shows. Starr is a federal judge conducting a
federal investigation under the supervision of three other federal
judges. He is neither campaigning to win public support nor is he
attempting to sway public opinion. He is simply investigating facts,
at the behest of Janet Reno, Clinton's own Attorney General, concerning
allegations of criminal behavior by the President of the United States.
If Clinton is winning the war of public opinion we shouldn't be
in the least surprised. He's the only one whose armed. But the war of
public opinion is really just a battle in the war for the truth.
Untimately Starr will bring the truth before a Grand Jury and at that
point, all the public relations people, all the spin doctors, and all
the careful and, quite frankly, gifted abilities of the Clinton
administration to manipulate public opinion will be meaningless. Only
the facts will prevail.
