And it'll happen to quite a few people (a miniscule number in the overall
scheme) in 2012 (or '23, '37) too, but it's still not a norm.
Anyway, for a typical investor a stop loss is not an important aspect in
the performance of their portfolio. Most will use a mutual fund and same
fund won't (can't) have more than 5% of their assets in any single issue,
so even if that stock goes to zero it can't (individually) have too
dramatic an effect on the overall holdings of the investor.
The "Enron" employees took a bath because they left too much in
"company" stock within their 401(k)s. That should be prohibited
by law (to prevent lack of common sense), and if it's not already, it will
be soon.
