subject: dbase problem

I am having a problem with dBase IV under a DOS session of OS/2 (Warp
connect). It has to do with index files (*.MDX). The simplest form
of the error is this:
go to the dot prompt
use
index on tag
I get an error message saying "File already open" and I am not able to
create the index tag. The only problem is that once in a while I am
able to create the tag but I can't seem to find any logic to it.
Also, this error occurs with files which already have an associated MDX
file and with files which don't so that's not the problem. Any ideas?
Any solutions? Is this a dbase/OS2 compatibility problem?
