BK>example, is to have my Normal.dot use size 12 font instead of size 10,
OK.
There's a template with a dos file name of "normal.dot".
Within that template there are several styles, one of which is
called "Normal".
Start a new document (File, New) based on the Normal template
(i.e. Normal.dot), display the formatting toolbar (View,
Toolbars, Formatting), and check out the drop-down list at the
left-hand end of the toolbar. You'll probably find items like
"Default Text" and "Normal" (hooray!) within.
Key in a line of text. With the text cursor in that text, choose
Format, Styles, select the "Normal" style. Confirm out of there.
Your text is probably Times New Roman 12pt, or some similar
vanilla flavour.
Now to modify the Normal style within your document:
Format, Styles, Modify, Format, Font.
Choose your favorite face, size, colour etc.
Confirm out of there.
Your line of text is now the new size, colour etc, because you've
changed the definition of the Normal style IN YOUR DOCUMENT.
Now to copy the new definition from your document to your
Normal.dot template:
Format, Styles, Organiser.
In the box headed by your document name, scroll through
to click just once on your Normal style. The definition should
display in the dialogue box as Yourface, Yoursize, Yourcolour
etc.
In the box headed by your normal.dot template, scroll
through to click just once on your Normal style. The definition
should display in the dialogue box as boring ole Times New Roman
12pt.
Back in the box headed by your document name, click once
on your Normal style, click once on the Copy button, and you're
done!
Now, under Tools Options, there's a card with a check box for
"prompt before saving normal.dot". You may want to check that on.
It reminds you that you are about to save to disk an updated
version of your Normal template.
Finally: I am of the persuasion that the Normal.dot should be
used as no more than a desk blotter, and should be deleted at the
end of each session. We should be making use of named templates
of your own, rather than clogging up normal.dot.
I really do hope that this helps.
