HX-Pro doesn't test and adjust the bias to match different tape formulations,
although there are high-end decks that can do automatic bias tuning.
To understand the concept behind HX-Pro, you have to understand what "bias"
is and why it's used. Very briefly, it's very-high-frequency (not VHF though
:) sine signal, typically 40kHz-80kHz or higher, that boosts the signal on
the tape to avoid "zero-crossing" distortion. When there's significant
high-frequency content in the input signal itself, that signal acts to
partially bias the overall signal. In these cases, HX-Pro lowers the level
of the record bias, thereby allowing more headroom for the higher audio
frequencies. more headroom means a hotter signal can then be recorded
without pushing the tape into saturation (and thus, distortion).
