I've heard them called "feral apostrophes"; they breed on
greengrocers' blackboards.

I had an English teacher who made the whole class chant "'I', 'T',
apostrophe, 'S' always means 'it is'", for about five minutes.

A five minute lesson and the rule was learned for life, but I'm not at all
sure how to handle the quoting in the preceding sentence.
