Although I have known of the book for a long time, I have only just got
hold of a copy of Richard Feynman's "QED, the Strange Theory of Light
and Matter". Having read just 1.5 chapters (there are only 4) I can
safely and strongly recommend this book to anybody who messes with light
(and just about everybody else as well).
Say you want to know the modern explanation of how a mirror works, or a
diffraction grating. This book will teach you quickly and easily. You may
not end up being able to do the math for yourself, but you should
understand the thinking behind the math. (There isn't actually any math in
it, at least up to page 49.)
