Last May I acquired a beautiful pair of Scarlet Macaws. Before they came I
had
build them a pen that was 8 ft. wide, 8ft. tall and 20 feet long. It has a
metal roof and 1/4 of it is sheltered. Inside the pen I hung their cage which
is 4x4x15. It is suspended from the ceiling by cable. At various points I put
in oak, from my trees, perches of all shapes and sizes.I had visions of them
finally being able to take a short flight. Right! So much for flight space.
Dartanion, male, and Tessa, female were handfed, domestic bred six years ago.
They have lived their life with the woman that I got them from until they
came
here. I have not owned any Macaws in the past and it has been a a new
experience for me.
Tessa is hugh and probably out weighs Dart by a pound. And from the looks of
the feathers is a different subspecies. They get along well together and a
not
as noisy as I thought they would be...most of the time. They can be very
aggressive toward me, or very docile. However, I do not reach in to give them
a scratch on the head.
Feeding time is sort of amusing. Although everyone is spread out over an
acre,
they can see me coming. Tessa will usually wait closest to the door that I
enter so that she can see what is in their bowl. If it is something that she
is really interested in she will climb up to a perch and head for the feeding
station. Her approach is not graceful, but it is quick, and when she gets
there she loads up her beak with her favorite items so that Dart can't
possibly get more than she does. Stupid, she isn't.
The other day I was outside and I heard my neighbor calling, "Stop it." I was
wondering if my dogs were into something, so I walked a little closer. Again
I
hear, "Stop it. Don't do that." But the voice was not my neighbor..it was
Dartanion. How clear his voice was. Hummmm? I began to wonder what it was
that
he use to do that he learned, stop it...don't do that, so well.
