As a follow up to the threads on vibrations control from the last few
weeks, I did a simple experiment last night on my 18 inch Equatorial
newtonian...
Normally, this scope takes about 3 seconds to get vibrations induced by a
sharp hit at the top of the scope to disapear... most of the vibrations are
the product of the large fork which as usual as a little bit of flexure.
I did the test to add a carbon (could be aluminum) tube going from the top
end of the scope up to the ground with a 45 degre angle between the two
points but did not try to secure this tube in any way... just having it
resting against the top cage...
Result is that with this very low tech change, the vibration now goes away
is about 1 second, an amazing difference.
this shows how much a little bit of coupling at the top of the tube will
improve this scope in windy conditions.
Now, I just need to find a good permanent way to get this on the scope but
I would encourage people with large dob to do the same test.
