Martial arts have many advantages beyond self-defense, although that is
a great advantage. My sons (now both black-belts in the Tang Soo Do Moo
Duk Kwan style of Karate) have learned a great deal of self-control
and self-confidence. It has helped them learn to concentrate better and
to deal with bullies in an assertive, but non-violent style. You are quite
right that expert training is necessary, both for martial arts and for
weapons. That's why my husband will be handling the weapons portion of
their education.
We also plan to sign them up for a "safe hunter" course when one becomes
available -- even though we don't plan to take them hunting -- just because
of the additional expert training in firearms safety.
