You forgot to add the surfers who have already apologized for being
influenced by the right wing racists

CRONULLA surfers have apologised for their role in Sunday's race riots,
saying they were ashamed by the violence and vowed not to allow a repeat.

"The day began as a show of solidarity against the behaviour of ethnic
gangs who have been harassing the public on our beaches over a period of
several years," the statement said.

"It escalated out of control under the influence of right wing
racists, from outside this community, and alcohol.

It would be probably correct to say that the riots started with a mindless
mob of youths and thugs and now a small number of extremists are attempting
to turn it into a religious confrontation. The heads of both the Christian
and Moslem churches in Australia along with their congregations have
decried the actions of that small lunatic fringe

Amjad Mehboob, head of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils, said
he believed the violence had been committed by an extremist fringe of the
Muslim community. "I wish we knew who they were. I wish we could
engage with them so we can find out what their beliefs are, so we can deal
with them," he said.

Reverend Glenys Biddle, of the Uniting church in Auburn, said the destroyed
hall had been a important part of the local Tongan community. "For
them, they have lost not only a physical building but a sense of
fellowship," she said. "A lot of memories have also been lost for
Anglos, Tongans and people of all sorts of cultures."

Shafiq Khan, the principal of the al-Faisal College next door, said
Christians and Muslims had always worked amicably, and the fire - coupled
with the fear it may promote - was a loss for both religions. "This is
a crime against peace, the community and the country; a crime against
harmony and against our children, who used the hall," he said.
