-> Simple (and hopefully not too dumb) question -
-> Is it safe to shoot 7.62 NATO ammo in a Savage 99 lever action
-> chambered for .308 Winchester?
->
-> I've heard assorted assertions that "the two ctges. are dimensionally
-> identical" as well as "no, they're slightly different". I've never
-> had trouble shooting 7.62 NATO in a bolt action .308, but I've never
-> had occasion to try it in any other action type.
->
-> Also - I've heard that 7.62 NATO is loaded to higher pressures than
-> (SAAMI- regulated) .308 Winchester.
C.O.W. says that 7.62Nato is loaded to 50,000 psi max average pressure.
Winchester Reloading Catalog 14th edition, copyright 1994, lists
a load for .308 Winchester that says 54,900 psi on page 42.
Hercules Reloader's Guide, 1992 edition, page 58, says that
the max average pressure utilized in that brochure for .308 Winchester
is 52,000 cup, or 60,000 psi.
Speer #12 states that the SAAMI max average pressure for the .308 Win
is 52,000 cup.
