subject: Virus infection or hardware problem

Ok I think I have been hit by a virus,
Symptoms:
The first was lockup in windows loading a EXCEL file.
This happened 2 times, had to reset the machine.
So I though I had a hardware problem, changed video cards (STB
1meg to Triden 1 meg) Dug out the triden video drivers.
Restarted window, typed to load the EXCEL file again. BLUE
SCREEN, saying a disk problem, try one more time after changing
the screen resolution, again the Blue screen........
Scandisk the hard drive, defrag the hard drive, scan for Virus
with F-PROT noticed error scanning IO.SYS and MSDOS.SYS file is
open? Didn't think much of it F-Prot reports NO Virus found?
Restart windows(3.1) load excel file ok. Go to print, drops out
of windows!
Try to restart windows, windows says a file is missing. Rescan
with F-Prot nothing found just the same message about the two dos
system files being open. This was from a COLD Boot on a DR DOS 7
system disk that was put away for a year. I'm using MS-DOS 6.22
form the hard drive. Another funny time the hard drive light did
not come on when F-Prot scanned the MBR!
Any Ideas as to what it is. I'm making a clean boot disk at work
and maybe I'll be able for scan using another program and clean my
system.
