Hello Jimmy -

JD> Maybe someone here can answer some questions I have about
JD> posting to FidoNet conferences and OLRs...

JD> 1) If I were to post a message to a fictitious name, say
JD> John Jacob Jingleheimer Smith, would it still appear in the
JD> conference?

The "To:" names are not verified in any way, so the answer is
yes.

JD> 2) What determines the sender's name on the messages?

No verification of "From:" either, so the answer is 'nothing'.

JD> I notice some people in other echoes have "aliases" - do
JD> they simply change the "FROM" field in their OLR?

(see above) 'Alias' are not allowed in most echos unless you
'sign' your real name at the end of the message.

JD> 3) How does the "private message" work?

There are no private messages within FIDO echos. I've often
wondered why OLRs even make the attempt to mark messages as
'private'.

There _is_ netmail which is 'private' if your BBS allows it but
it hasn't worked 100% for me and I just use Internet email for
private messages.

fwiw: I've been online for over 20 years and have never used an
alias unless it was required by limitations in the number of
characters allowed as a username. Put my name into Google and
you will see my name in archived FIDO messages, usenet, and various
forums dating back several years. I have no reason to hide. :-)
