Just get a good-tempered couple of donkeys, or the "cure" will be as
bad as the problem. And that includes keeping your own dog(s) out of
the field. Moreover, any baby donkeys would be at risk; so the best
donkeys for such guard duty are normally neutered males.
Another coyote deterrent is a shaggy maned large guard dog breed such
as Komondor. Their tight long ringlets mean a mouthful of fuzz for
predatory animals. My daughter's yearling drove off coyotes, cougars,
and recently a bear. Komondors are not social animals, and therefore
must be raised from puppyhood among the animals you want them to
protect. Nor are they good in situations where strange people wander
through your area -they will remove the flock from danger as much as
possible, but may attack nosy strangers who get too close. Keep
liability insurance paid.
An interesting side note: Within a few weeks of getting her Komondor,
my daughter noticed the coyotes started visiting the neighbour's
place and avoiding hers. She considers the money well spent, even
though a cougar managed to kill one of her horses last summer before
the dog drove it away. Same cougar, or its sibling, both orphaned
when their mother was killed, killed a woman on horseback a couple of
weeks later, was tracked down and shot. It very untypically was not
afraid of people on horseback. But it was driven off by the dog.
