When I referred to purity, that is what I was referring to, as close to
pure-antideuterium as possible. IF you have multiple elements in the
matter or anti-matter stream you will get fluctuations in the reaction as
the heavier or lighter elements are annihilated. Also, I chose deuterium,
primarily because, Deuterium is Denser than regular hydrogen, packing more
mass into the same volume without the Radio-active byproducts of Tritium
which with one more neutron than deuterium is even denser however it decays
to deuterium in a relatively short time. This allows you to have more bang
for your buck, in a basis of volume. I suppose even Helium would be a
better choice, but to get that you would have to have a fusion reaction of
anti-hydrogen to produce it, and the idea of trying to contain a
anti-matter Fusion reaction is ... daunting I would think. That being said,
there probably are minute traces of heavier elements created as the plasma
condenses, but these are screened out.
Jay,
As to WHY on mercury, the Raw materials are there already. If you
put them in space you have to lift the stuff up there first. Also, In my
minds eye there is already an extensive infrastructure on mercury from
decades of past mining expeditions that is simply built onto and expanded.
Jay, also good point about the plasma production. That I will re-think a
little bit, and come to the conclusion that if the reaction is matter
biased for plasma production, then the anti-matter erosion idea I had isn't
really a problem anymore. Though I still maintain the use of as pure
anti-deuterium as possible in order to maintain a smooth non-fluctuating
reaction. Of course 100% isn't feasible, but Starfleet maintains a tighter
standard than almost anyone else.
Jason
PS. Anyone know HOW deuterium currently is separated out?

That was my interpretation as well.
