I like to use vegtable oil.

The cleaning power of vegetable oil or animal fat such as hamburger grease
seems not to be well known. It quickly breaks down such things as roofing
tar, grease and grime you get on your hands when doing auto engine repair,
and although I haven't tried it on pitch, I'll bet it will work well.
Rub the oil in until it emulsifies the grime and then wash off with
soap and water. You get much better results than products on the market
such as hand cleaners for mechanics that will turn the texture of your skin
into something like 10 grit sandpaper.
If it was well known that veggie oil or hamburger grease worked so
well no one would buy those "obviously harmful to your health"
hand cleaning products.
I would not want to use turpentine, linseed oil, paint thinner,
acetone and other such things on flesh. I've eaten vegetable oil and
hamburger grease so if its harmful a bit more on my skin doesn't seem to be
much to worry about.
