I'm not familiar with what Squish format is, but if WWIV had some type of
Fidonet message base option, that would make things much easier.  Back when
I used to mod the BBS all the time, I started with Pascal and then 'C'. 
They are very similar from what I remember.  I have my current modded BBS's
source code and could still mod some things, but I wouldn't know where to
start on adding a functionality like that.
