Kwanza was invented in 1966 by a guy who 2 years later would be convicted
of torturing two black women by beating them with electrical cords and
taking a hot soldering iron to both the inside of the mouth and face of one
of them. At that time he was a no nothing extremist who headed a gang that
was the counterpart to the Black Panthers.  Knowing nothing about the real
history of his people he went around wearing Dashikis and speaking in
Swahili (never mind most slaves came from West Africa 1000 miles away from
the nearest place to speak Swahili).  His followers shot a black panther
guy to death on the campus of UCLA, prior to the torture conviction,
because the black panther guy and this idiot were rivals to head the black
studies department. For some reason there was no investigation by UCLA and
they didn't seem to care that college students who hadn't graduated high
school but were admitted into black studies on a pure affirmative action
basis were gun toting gangsta communists.

A true con man, with about 3% of the population falling for it.  In the
great tradition of academia he is now the head of the black studies
department at UC Davis.  They hired him within a couple years of his being
released from prison for torturing the two black women.
