Good evening Charles,

I have not found the definition of HAM but the first chapter in the
Radio Amateurs Handbook 1981 starts with:

"Amateur Radio. You've heard of it.
You probably know that Amateur Radio
operators are also called "hams".
(Nobody knows quite why!) But who are
these people and what do they do?"

The reason for referring to the 1981 handbook: It was easier to get to.

Have a good night,

Holger
