 Patsy, you may be thinking of Lawrence Sanders' "McNally" series.
 Travis McGee lives on a houseboat  (named the Busted Flush) he won in
 a poker game.  He "retires" about as often as he works.  I love the
 McGee series although he's definitely a retrograde chauvinist in a
 very nice way.  This series has "colors" in the titles.
