Are you using an amd64 by chance? I get the same thing here using
an amd64, but AFIK it runs ok on 32 bit systems.

I have done that before with inetd although I forget exactly how I did
it. Have you tried with what is at the bottom of the QUICKSTART file?
I can't remeber if that is for telnet/dialup or both.
