WL> Of course, most cats seem to be inexplicably
WL> attracted to "non-cat" people, which I suppose
WL> is just part of their charm.
In ILLUSTRATED CAT WATCHING, Desmond Morris posits
this reason for that demonstratable cat behavior:
"When a cat enters the room and looks around, it
notices that several people are staring at it. They
are the cat-lovers, gazing at the cat because they
like it. But, in feline terms, to be stared at is
to be mildly threatened. ... Instead of a glance,
which is always acceptable, [animal lovers] keep
staring at the animal in a way that makes it feel
uncomfortable. The only person there not doing this
is the cat-hater, who looks away and keeps very still,
trying to be ignored by the the feared animal. But
such behavior has precicely the opposite effect. For
the cat, in search of a friendly lap on which to sit,
makes a bee-line for this ideal companion, who is not
moving around, not waving hands, not making shrill
remarks, and above all, not staring."
Sounds as good as any explanation to me. :,
