Isn't is true that the only thing that will keep my AT (Hayes) compatible
modem from working exactly as a Hayes is the coding in the modem's firmware?
(The S registers.) As far as shareware, I have't seen any. I spent hours on
local BBSs downloading shareware after shareware modules, and none of them
solved my problem because they were a) for Windows only, or b) were not true
auto answering fax software. I don't wish to be rude, but I think it is lame
of Hayes to tell me a $300+ upgrade for memory and another operating system
(and I am runnign a 486 system) is dirt cheap, and that the only thing I have
to worry about is a monitor. I think modem manufacturers have done a great
job of keeping up with technological changes and all the frills that
accompany them, but a uniformly poor job of solving problems. I had to
threaten to return my modem if I did not get at least a driver that would
work without Windows, and this time it worked. I think Hayes and other modem
manufacturers are income chasing, and they are failing to see there is a
market out there for DOS driven products. It's called goowill, the same
thing that causes Hayes to maintain and monitor this echo.
