I ride English too.  I've been taking lessons now for about 8 years and
got my first horse about 6 years ago.  I started lessons through our
local college and talked my husband into joining me the next semester.
Once he went over a jump he was hooked and we now own 2 QH both liver
chestnuts about 16H, a mare and a gelding.  The mare is the smoothest
mover I've ever ridden.  Her trot is so smooth its hard to rise to and
even a first time rider could ride her canter.
