California doesn't get that hot, unless you live in the back country or
the desert. Lakeside is back country. However, during Santa Ana
conditions, the temps rise higher than Texas and that makes for an
offshore flow of very hot air. At least during those times, the smog level
goes to nill. If you live along the coast, you can look out to sea and see
what you've been breathing during the onshore flow periods.
