Bob,
I have no idea what's going on with Motorola, their press release was
kind of vague. As far as I know this is the first time Motorola has used
Rockwell. We've used their chips in a number of our products for a long
time, we're quite adept at working around problems, tweaking and fine
tuning their chips. We haven't seen any significant problems in our
testing so far, Rockwell is providing us with chips, and we plan to ship on
schedule.
We will be keeping an eye on the issue. All of our 56K units will have
flashroms, so if a problem does turn up, we'll make a fix available for
download. This shouldn't be a big deal. In fact, as various 56K hosts get
out there from different vendors, and including chipsets from both Lucent
and Rockwell, I wouldn't be surprised to see a number of flash code
releases over the coming months as everyone works to maximize both
performance and compatibility. I suspect these type of upgrades are just
simply going to be a fact of life with 56K products from all vendors for
the foreseeable future, and that's why everything is going out the door with
flashroms.
