When the Travers Race was still the "4th Jewel of the Triple Crown", 
people were getting as much as $50 to park your car on their lawn!  

You couldn't move in that town in August.  Many of the locals would rent 
out their houses for as much as $5000+ a week.  It was their paid 
vacation money.  I heard of people sleeping in someone's closet for 
$20/night.  Motel rooms were impossible to get at any price if you just 
happened to be passing through.  

The Breeders Cup and its huge payout ruined that August time of year.  I 
could have watched Secretariat run, but I played golf instead.  I had 
forgotten that the race was that day and I got stuck in traffic.  The 
best place to turn around was the golf course.  Turned out, no one was 
there!  Everyone but me was at the race.
