Make that the record companies. A lot of the "studios"
never really reaped anything from that, but the folks at the major labels sure did.
About that same time was when dat was coming out, and they
developed scms, or "serial copy management system" to keep
people from making unlimited digital copies.
fOr example, I mix down an artist to digital audio tape, and I engage scms.
THat means that he could not run copies from that dat tape because scms
wouldn't allow it, if done
digitally.
THink I told a story on myself elsewhere this thread where I accidentally
put scms data in the mix down stream of a
client's dat tape that we then sent to a cd production
outfit in CAlifornia. THey had to do some extra processing
when creating his glass master to strip away the scms data,
and I got to eat the $85 charge for that one.
Regards,
Richard
