But of course.  There used to be a lot of corner stores in my old 
home town.  All of them were dual purpose.  One was, as you 
describe, a store front in a standard house. IIRC, only one of 
them is used commercially now.

In those cases, a zoning variance goes into effect and, quite often, 
the residential neighbors move out.  That's especially true if the 
business is a feed lot!  

Going back to my home town, though they are long gone, I can still 
recall the smell of rubber that permeated the town.  And, like the 
feedlot in Montana, the processing plant was downwind.  Other towns 
in the area smelled like leather.  That might explain why I don't 
own a leather jacket!
