| subject: | Your system? |
I'd love to hear what you're doing/have done to your system.
These are some of the features I've added to my BBS, in no particular order:
1. Matrix login - people now can retrieve passwords via email, page/email
the sysop, or log in as guest.
2. Oneliners - I've got the bbs-scene.org one-liners script running as part
of the welcome screens.
3. Echoes - I've got a general usenet feed through my desktop NNTP provider,
and bbs-scene newsgroups via bbs-scene.org. I mostly did this to see if I
could set up multiple NNTP providers in Synchronet!
4. ANSI - I'm a horrible ANSI artist, never did much for my BBS, but I
dusted off a copy of TheDRAW and have started adding ANSI bits here and
there.
5. NNTP - most of my echoes are available (via NNTP). I've had fun playing
with reading BBS mail in a news reader, but I think I still prefer QWK.
6. ecWeb v2 - Electronic chicken's web enhancements for Synchronet - makes a
cleaner looking web interface than stock Synchronet, and comes with a flash
IRC and telnet client.
7. realitycheckRADIO - I'm streaming music off of the BBS, looking for a way
to import current song into the MOTD.
8. Facebook integration - the BBS general messages board now updates my
realitycheckBBS Facebook page via RSS.
9. Mail/domain - I had to get a mail relay to get mail past my cable
internet provider, but with it, I have my own domain (realitycheckBBS.org)
and mail to/from the BBS. Not that important nowadays, as no one's using my
email as their primary provider, but it's nice to be able to respond to BBS
mail and have it be forwarded to the user's email address - helps keep the
BBS in mind.
10. Virtual hosts - Synchronet has the ability to set up virtual hosts, and
I've got a page for realitycheckRADIO and more coming.
What's on the plate?
1. I want to get a log rotation script working, and consolidate daily
Synchronet, mailer, and tosser logs in one place, rotated nightly - maybe
emailing them to my BBS account.
2. I've been trying to find time to get ALLFIX working - I'd like to hook
into some of the (still active) FILEBONE areas and pass files onto my
downlinks. ALLFIX is mostly working, but still crashes in the middle of runs
occasionally.
3. I'd love to find a way to put a friendlier web front-end on the message
areas - maybe find an http front-end for NNTP? Gating messages to vBulletin
sounds like a pain.
4. I have a phone line at home that gets minimal use. I'm going to set it up
as a dial-out like for the Fido networks.
5. It looks like you can do a LOT to mod synchronet using Javascript and
Baja. I swore off of programming years ago, but have been tempted to try my
hand at it again.
6. If I get really bored, I'll try porting the BBS over to Linux, then move
my web host and the BBS to a VPS service. This'll clear up the issue with
blocked ports, save me some money on hosting, and give me some more
projects.
