Also, the faster you can go to a large diameter, the stiffer the drill
gets, and thus less prone to deflections.
Even then, I have seen someone (ok, it was me a long time ago :-) have a
large diameter drill deflect by a large amount.

This is all kind of a moot point when drilling by hand, as your holes are
bound to be less accurate...

Also, use cutting fluid and sharp tools and the right spindle speed(s).

For really accurate holes, and to overcome chatter problems as Dwight
mentions, you should use a reamer.
