Hmmm ... I've not paid any attention to whether it's using the sound
card or PC speaker, but you can configure Win 3.1 to use the speaker
as if it were a sound card.  In fact, I think there's an archive of
the speaker driver and instructions on modifying the *.ini file to
make it work.  (I've got a couple of the systems at work set up this
way.)
